A warehouse apartment with real retro-style
We don’t often feature New York in our design section, but this is so achingly cool, we couldn’t resist it. It’s designed by award-winning US firm Min Design and is a penthouse apartment that nestles on top of a warehouse-style building in the heart of the hip Tribeca neighbourhood in Lower Manhattan.

The architects worked closely with the homeowners, taking a light-handed approach, introducing elegant architectural elements that seamlessly blend with the building’s historic character.

The result is a serene, playful and yet highly functional living space that has been carefully tailored to accommodate a family and their young children.

The client wanted something quietly sophisticated and so Min Design employed durable, unfussy materials and a minimal colour palette. This provided a striking counterpoint to the building’s existing heavy timber framework and a tasteful backdrop for the family’s artwork.

According to the architects, one of the biggest challenges was the redesign of the staircase, with the original feeling out of place within the rest of the apartment. Min Design ingeniously transformed it into a focal point, utilising folded steel plates to define its form and infusing the space with light.

The colours and materials continue into the simple yet elegant kitchen.
