The Hidden House
Casa Escondida sits in a quiet suburban road on the outskirts of Mexico City. Its façade is simple and modest, with only its elegant proportions providing a clue as to what might lie beyond…

It’s only as you step through the door that you begin to get an idea of the sheer enormity of this 1,200sqm home.

And it just keeps getting bigger and bigger, stretching over two floors and a basement that houses a whopping 12-car garage, equipment rooms, a games room, gym with dressing room and a bathroom.

The sitting room is simply enormous. It’s so big, it has not one but two family sized dining tables (see below).

At times, it can feel a bit like an Italian furniture showroom, but the architects, Grupo Arquitectura, then balance that with some wonderful, jewel-like small spaces, such as this snug. And the bedrooms and bathrooms, although by no means small, have a more human scale.

All the bedrooms have a balcony with views over the garden, as well as private bathrooms. And the master bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe that would put many a clothes shop to shame!

The kitchen is also on a surprisingly modest scale, but no expense has been spared and it looks fabulous.

It’s only really, though, when you see the back of the house, that the true extent of the building becomes clear.
